You type something into ChatGPT. The response is… fine. Kind of generic. Not really what you wanted. So you try again. And again. Maybe you add “be more specific” at the end, as if that helps.

The “just figure it out” prompt

Here’s the most common mistake we see:

This feels reasonable. But think about what you’re asking the model to do. You’ve given it a topic and nothing else. No audience. No length. No tone. No angle. No format.

The model has to guess all of that. And it will, by defaulting to the most generic, middle-of-the-road version of everything. It is possible to come to a great result by starting out with this, and letting the model ask you questions for clarification and extra context, but that’s not how most people use it.

The fix: Be explicit about what you actually want. Not just the topic, but the shape of the output.

Your task: Write a 600-word blog post for freelance designers about how time-blocking improves client work quality.

The tone of the output should be Casual, Encouraging.

Always adhere to the following constraints: Include three actionable tips with examples.

Same topic. Wildly different result.

The kitchen sink prompt

The opposite extreme is just as common. You dump everything into one massive prompt (context, instructions, examples, constraints, follow-up questions) and hope the model sorts it all out.

It won’t. Long, unstructured prompts confuse models the same way they’d confuse a person. The signal gets lost in the noise.

The fix: Structure your prompt into clear sections. Think of it like a brief:

  • Role: Who should the model be?
  • Task: What exactly should it do?
  • Context: What does it need to know?
  • Constraints: What should it avoid?
  • Format: How should the output look?

You don’t need all five every time. But separating concerns makes a massive difference.

The “be more creative” trap

When the output is too bland, people add vague qualifiers: “be more creative,” “make it engaging,” “think outside the box.”.

These words mean nothing to a language model. They’re subjective, ambiguous, and the model has no way to calibrate what “creative” means to you.

The fix: Replace vague qualifiers with concrete examples or constraints.

Instead of “be more creative,” try:

  • “Use unexpected metaphors from the world of cooking”
  • “Open with a provocative question that challenges conventional wisdom”
  • “Write in the style of a late-night talk show monologue”

The more specific your creative direction, the more interesting the output.

The one-shot mindset

Many people treat prompting as a single interaction. One prompt, one response, done. If the result isn’t right, they start over from scratch. And they use the famous “Make no mistakes” constraint.

But the best results almost always come from iteration. The first response is a draft, not a final product.

The fix: Work in rounds.

  1. Start with a clear initial prompt
  2. Evaluate what’s good and what’s off
  3. Give targeted feedback: “The tone is right, but the examples are too abstract. Replace them with real-world scenarios from e-commerce.”
  4. Repeat until you’re happy

The missing persona

Here’s one that trips up even experienced users: forgetting to tell the model who it is.

A prompt without a persona is like asking “someone” for advice. You’ll get a generic answer from a generic voice. But if you tell the model it’s a senior UX researcher with 10 years of experience, the depth and specificity of the response changes dramatically.

The fix: Start with a clear role definition.

You are an experienced content strategist who specializes in B2B SaaS. You write in a direct, no-nonsense style and always back up recommendations with reasoning.

Notice something? Every failure mode comes down to the same root cause: ambiguity.

When you leave things open to interpretation, the model fills in the blanks with the most probable (read: most generic) option. The more precisely you define what you want, the better the result.
